Summer Term 2024

It's a big term for our Y6 children because on top of the normal lessons, they will also have some extra things to look forward to. SATs week is the 4th week back after Easter and although it's normal for the children to feel a little nervous about this, we fill the week with lots of lovely activities so that the testing aspect only seems to be a small part of the entire week. We'll offer them all a breakfast club that week, waffles and ice cream on Friday morning and a celebration BBQ after school on Friday. There'll be some other things for them to enjoy too. Details about all of this will be sent out to parents of Y6 children soon.

Y6 children will also have their transition day(s) at their new high schools. I'm sure that these will be really exciting for them all.

We also have our Year 5/6 school production to prepare. Make sure you don't miss it!

This term in English we will start by working on a book called Letters from the Lighthouse, written by Emma Carroll. A brief synopsis of this book is as follows. After months of bombing raids in London, twelve-year-old Olive Bradshaw and her little brother Cliff are evacuated to the Devon coast. The only person with two spare beds is Mr Ephraim, the local lighthouse keeper. But he's not used to company and he certainly doesn't want any evacuees.

For VIPERS, we will also use Letters from the Lighthouse, running our comprehension work alongside our written work.

As ever, we will continue working on spelling and grammar throughout the term.

As the weather starts to improve, we will enjoy being outside as much as possible for PE. We will be working on striking and fielding games such as rounders and cricket as well as running, throwing and jumping in athletics.

Our history topic for this term is the Tudors. We will look in detail at what life was like during Tudor times for both the wealthy and poor people living in our country.

In science, we will be learning about Earth and our solar system. This is a topic that I love teaching as I know the children are always really interested in this as they learn some amazing facts.

RE: Christianity/Resurrection and then Humanism/Happiness.

DT: Mechanical systems.

ICT: Coding/crumblebots and then Networks/Blogging.

Online Safety: Cyberbullying and location finders.

French: Les vêtements + additional activities.

Music: Year 5 - Brass. Year 6 - Singing and drama linked to the school performance.

Our PE days continue to be Wednesday and Friday.  Please ensure that a full PE kit is in school on both days.

To learn more about our curriculum in Year 5/6, head to the Curriculum pages on our website or speak to one of the Year 5/6 team.

Please make sure that your child has a water bottle in school every day and with the weather warming, it may be worth making sure they are protected with sunscreen each day.

We’re looking forward to a fantastic spring term.
