Spring Term 2026

We are looking forward to Spring in Oak Class although we expect some more cold weather first!

In English, we will start by looking at writing our own endings followed by newspaper articles and then poetry. Our VIPERS book is called Skychasers, an exciting adventure book that was written by Emma Carroll.

In Maths, we will continue to focus on improving our arithmetic skills, using appropriate methods for all 4 operations. As always, we will be working on knowing our times tables and using these to help with our mental methods. We will be starting the year by looking at fractions, decimals and percentages followed by different types of measurement, including converting between different units of measure.

Our PE days will be Wednesday and Friday.  Please ensure that a full PE kit is in school on both days with suitable clothing for both inside and outside lessons.

In science we will look at properties of materials and the human life-cycle.

Art will be creating an art installation whilst in history we will be learning what life was like in Tudor times, the monarchs and who reigned before and after the Tudors.

In computing we will be learning to write a program with commands, in French we will be learning numbers, months of the year, family and birthdays.  In RE we will learn about how Brahman and Atman influence Hindu lives. Our PSHE will focus on family and relationships

Year 4 will have music lessons with Mr Robinson, while Year 5 will have Mr Courtney for brass lessons. We run this as a carousel on Thursday afternoons when they also have ICT lessons with Mrs Mawson and French with Mrs Bones.

Please make sure that your child has a water bottle in school every day.

Here's to a fantastic term.

Curriculum Overview Year 4 and 5

Spring Term 2026

Maths

This term in maths, pupils will build confidence and fluency across a range of key skills. We will be practising times tables and strengthening arithmetic skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Alongside this, pupils will explore measurement, including converting between different units. We will also develop understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages, helping pupils see the connections between them and apply their knowledge to practical problem-solving situations.

English

Our VIPERS book is called Skychasers, an exciting adventure book that was written by Emma Carroll.  We use the VIPERS reading strategy, ensuring pupils build their comprehension skills effectively. VIPERS stands for Vocabulary, Infer, Predict, Explain, Retrieve, Summarise and we use this across the whole school.

In writing, we will create our own endings to stories, write newspaper reports and then poetry.

Throughout the term, children will be taught grammar, spelling and handwriting.

Science

Children will start this term learning about the properties of materials. This will include magnetism, thermal insulation and how tough different materials are.

They will then move on to learning about the life cycles of animals, including humans.

Art and DT

Year 4 and 5 will be studying a sculpture and 3D art unit exploring how artists use space, scale and shape to create powerful visual experiences. They will learn how the size of a three-dimensional artwork can change its impact and how foreground, middle ground and background are used to create a sense of depth. They will be introduced to interactive art installations, discovering how these artworks transform a space and allow the viewer to experience art all around them. Through practical exploration, pupils use shape and composition to design and create their own engaging 3D pieces.

DT will be taught in the 2nd half term.

Geography

After half term we will be looking at why people live near volcanoes. In this geography unit, the children will learn about the powerful forces that shape our planet. They explore the layers of the Earth, how mountains and volcanoes are formed, and where these features are found around the world. They will  discover why earthquakes and volcanoes happen along tectonic plate boundaries and consider the effects these natural events can have on people and communities. Through practical fieldwork, pupils observe, record and map different types of rocks, helping them to understand where rocks come from and how geographers collect and use evidence.

History

This half term, year 4 and 5 will be learning about life in Tudor England. We will explore the Tudor period through the lives and power of its monarchs. Using a range of primary and secondary sources, we will investigate Henry VIII, his wives and marriage choices, and reflect on the nature of absolute power. The children will evaluate the reliability of historical evidence, and develop their own interpretations supported by sources. There will be creative historical writing opportunities linked to the topic.

Computing

This term in computing, we will be developing our coding skills using a computer program to create repeated patterns. Children will learn how to use sequences and repetition (loops) to make their code more efficient and accurate. Through practical activities, pupils will test, debug and refine their programs, helping them to understand how patterns can be generated and controlled using code.

French

This half term in MFL, we’re studying a Rigolo unit called Ma Famille where students will learn vocabulary related to their family and home and a unit called Bon Anniversaire which will include learning months of the year and larger numbers.

Vocabulary will include: French for numbers 21 - 31,  months of the year in French and  family members including mother (ma mere), father (mon pere), brother (mon frere), sister (ma soeur) my parent (mes parents).

They will also learn that I have is 'J'ai'

PSHE

The term will start with a focus on manners and respect for others, followed by looking at boundaries in our friendships.  We will look at the impact of bullying, why it might happen and its impact.  We will learn about stereotypes, how these can be negative and how they might change our opinions.  Bereavement, how it makes us feel and who we can talk to will finish the half term.

R.E.

In the first  RE unit, children will learn about key beliefs in Hinduism and how these beliefs influence the way Hindus live their lives. They explore the ideas of Brahman as the one supreme being and Atman as the connection between all living things. They will also learn about important Hindu symbols, stories and traditions, including Aum, Namaste, and why cows are considered sacred. Through stories such as Svetaketu and the fable of the Magpie and the Bull, pupils reflect on questions about meaning, purpose and how beliefs can guide everyday life.

Our second unit will be based on Islam and is called Prophethood.

Music

This year, Y5 will be learning to play a brass instrument under the guidance of Mr Courtney.

Y4 children will continue learning to play the ukulele, moving on from just playing single notes to learning some chords.

PE

This term in gymnastics, children will practise balances, rolls and improving the quality of these movements before working in groups to sequence the movements.

In hockey, the children will learn the skills of attacking and defending which they can use in a game.
